Search Engines Hit by Court Case in California
7 Aug 2004

Yahoo has responded to a lawsuit filed against it and twelve other major search engines, which accuses it of profiting illegally from online gambling listings. Yahoo, which along with Google and Overture, publicly decided to pull all its gambling advertising last April, said it would not comment on the forthcoming court case, but added: 'Yahoo, nor Overture, nor Altavista, nor any other Yahoo network accepts paid listings for online gambling.'

Amongst the other defendants sited in the suit, which was presented to the San Francisco Superior Court on Tuesday, are Google, Overture, Ask Jeeves, Looksmart, CNet, Altavista and Terra Lycos. The lawsuit further demands that the companies completely ban all forms of online gambling advertising and, in the words of prosecuting attorney, Ira Rothken, return their ‘ill-gotten gains’ to the people of California.

“By this action,” it reads, “plaintiffs seek to have defendant’s paid advertising of Gambling in California declared illegal, seek to enjoin defendants from advertising unlicensed Internet gambling businesses to persons in California, and seek to have defendants disgorge and forfeit all revenues and profits from such illegal activities to a fund to be used for purposes directed by the court...”
