No Extradition for Online Bookmaker Cyber-Extortionists
7 Aug 2004
UK authorities have said this week that they have no plans to seek the extradition of the Russian gang accused of orchestrating a spate of DOS attacks against British online bookmakers, and are content to see them face trial in Russia.
The Cyber-extortionists were arrested last month in and around St Petersburg following a joint UK and Russian police investigation. A spokesperson for the UK’s National Crime Unit said that, although the gang are thought to have obtained tens of millions from British online betting businesses, they will be leaving prosecution to the Russian courts.
The gang used Denial of Service attacks to overload websites with requests for information, effectively crippling the servers, and then requesting ransom money to stop the attacks. Russia’s Interior Ministry has also said that they had started to turn their attention to British banks.
Under Russian law, the suspects could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of extortion.
