Intense press interest in US in AOL spamming case
8 Jul 2004
Information regarding the suspect in the AOL spamming investigation, Sean Dunaway, has started being leaked to the press. Two American men, Dunaway and his alleged partner, Jason Smathers, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison, and fined up to US$250,000 if they are found guilty of the charges currently being levied at them. Federal agents seized them last month, as they were believed to have between them sold 92 million AOL email addresses to a spam organisation looking to sell penis-enlargement pills.
It is believed that Dunaway, who ran an online gambling site, paid AOL employee Smathers US$100,000 for the addresses. The case is gaining a lot of attention in the US with reports appearing every day as to the characters of the accused, and any developments or uncovered information pertaining to the case.
The background of both men is being pored over whilst they wait to face the federal authorities in New York on July 23. Not only is Dunaway facing sentencing should he be found guilty of the sale of the AOL addresses, but also if it is proven that he was the operator of an online gambling site. His attorney, Kevin Kelly, disputes the claim, commenting instead that Dunaway was involved in email marketing rather than online gambling.
