GamCare Calls For Under-age Gambling Clampdown
17 Jul 2004
GamCare, the UK charity that promotes responsible gambling, has criticised service providers and mobile phone companies for not doing enough to discourage under-age gambling. GamCare’s Michael Smeaton told New Media Age that many operations do not stringently check user age or display sufficient age limit warnings. 'Age verification is still an absolutely massive problem. I'm stunned that no ISPs have been involved yet, Maybe they don't realise there's a problem.'
In Smeaton’s view the acceptance of debit cards such as Solo or Electron are a cause for concern, as they are often issued by banks to children as young as eleven. There are currently anything up to one million under eighteens in the UK with such cards.
While Smeaton praised a lot of operations for their sensitivity and commitment to the issue, and admitted it was hard to know the extent of the problem, he said he knew of several cases where gambling operations failed to stop under-age gambling, including one 'known brand with a UK connection'.
