Australian Government to Crack Down on Internet Gambling
23 Jun 2004

Speculation is rising that the Australian Government’s decision on foreign Internet gambling may come as early as next week. Sources say the Cabinet is expected to take a hard line approach, bacause of its perception that online casinos may be used for ‘terrorist financing’.

The government officially banned iGaming in 2001, but has spent the last year looking at ways to combat legal loopholes that have allowed some forms of internet betting to remain. According to the Australian press, the cabinet has been examining various options including total prohibition, stiff industry regulations, or leaving policing to the states.

Officials are also under pressure from church groups who argue that foreign betting exchanges such as Betfair are a threat to the nations children. Betfair’s Mark Davies responded to these allegations today by stating that the church leaders’ objections were to Internet gambling as a whole, and singling out one operator was illogical.
