WCOOP Hits £30 Million Mark

Experts predicted that this year’s World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) would break records and it has just been announced that the poker series has exceeded expectations. It was estimated that the series would generate a prize pool of £24 million, but the WCOOP has released its official results. The championship’s 45 events have generated a prize pool of more than £30 million. For an event that is only 7-years-old, these numbers are staggering.

The WCOOP main event, which took place on September 22, has already generated 10% of this total. With 2144 players (40 players less than last year’s final event), the total prize pool for this single event has topped £6 million. Assuming that there are no final table deals, the winner of the main event will walk away with £1 million, one of the biggest online poker jackpots in history.

These numbers are great signifying factors of the WCOOP’s growth, despite a downturned economy. Even as the American government considers banning online poker, such tournaments continue to see massive increases of players each year. The WCOOP’s record-breaking prize pool is more than double the prize pool of WCOOP 2007. In fact, this year’s event is almost 70-times the size of the inaugural WCOOP in 2007, when only 238 players competed and the prize pool was no greater than £35 000. Experts can only expect to see similar numbers in next year’s tournament, either matching or topping the immensity of this year’s prize pool.
