UK’s straight talking gambling chief causes political storm

Dean’s comments so embarrassed the Government that Richard Carborn, the Culture Minister, hunted Dean down on his skiing holiday in order to reprimand him.

Ministers are apparently particularly upset by Dean’s repeated public insistence that the Gambling Commission should not regulate “onerously” – a comment which has allowed Conservatives to claim the Government appointed a soft touch to the post.

And Dean left ministers red faced with both anger and embarrassment after he suggested Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, “exaggerated” the case for ‘super casinos’ in an effort to push the Bill through Parliament.

Unfortunately for the Government Dean didn’t stop there, but went on to suggest the UK Gambling Commission would be a lenient regulator which believed regional casinos with million-pound slot machines were “not such a big deal”.

The candid comments by Peter Dean have left the Government exasperated, as it has badly damaged ministers’s attempts to give the impression that changes to the gambling industry would be rigorously regulated.

According to The Times Richard Carborn gave Dean a serious “dressing down” along with clear instructions about how the Gambling Commission is to operate. A government media handler will now attend future interviews given by Peter Dean.
