William Hill’s Offshore Move May Neglect UK
William
Hill and Ladbrokes, two of biggest names in UK gaming, have recently decided to
move their operations offshore to Gibraltar. As a result, UK officials have
noted that this may have very negative effects for not only the online casino
industry, but for the UK online gambling industry as a whole.
In early August, William Hill announced that they would soon be moving their operators to Gibraltar, a popular offshore location for online gambling operators. Facing a 15% tax in the UK, William Hill found Gibraltar’s mere 3% gaming tax more bearable. Soon after, Ladbrokes decided to make the move, as well.
Now, many UK gaming officials are seeing the effects of these relocations. Without the large profits that William Hill and Ladbrokes generate, the UK is in a tight position, possibly suffering from the loss of these two gaming giants.
The UK government, itself, is being blamed for the possible loss of profits. The 15% tax was implemented by Gordon Brown, who hoped to attract gambling operators and entice them to move their operations to the UK. However, the plan did not go as planned, and the tax has ended up pushing out two of the UK’s biggest operators. Many believe that more operators may make similar moves if the gaming tax is not repealed soon.
