UK Gambling Commission may restrict novelty bets

Novelty bets, such as how long it will be till the first corner or how many players will be yellow carded during the course of a game, are seen to be more open to corruption, as the outcome is easier to arrange. Corruption is also difficult to prove in such cases.

As a result the Gambling Commission is considering fording online bookmakers to stop taking such bets, action which would be a big blow to the like of Betfair and William Hill. These sorts of bets are becoming more and more popular and are particular common online.

But this has not gone unnoticed by the major sporting bodies, and calls from the governing bodies of football, cricket, rugby, tennis, and rugby league have forced the Gambling Commission to look into the issue. Bookmakers are resisting the calls however, suggesting there is no evidence for cheating on these bets.
