UK casinos could increase by 50 per cent
According to the report there could be as many as 211 casinos by the time the next-generation licenses are granted under the new Gambling Act.
The Guardian claims 39 applications have been filed so far this year (with the old gambling commission) – that is double last years number. 12 applications are at the stage of receiving a hearing with the commission, and 21 sites have already been granted licenses, but are not yet in operation.
Those applying for new licenses include Stanley Leisure – the UK’s largest casino operator, Gala, and Thistle Hotels.
Colin Child, finance director of Stanley Leisure, commented this week that it was still “too early to tell” how beneficial the new Gambling Act had been for his company, but added that early signs were good.
