Torquay to become the “Monte Carlo of the West Country”
Nick Bye, mayor of Torquay, gave his approval in March for the council to submit a formal application for a new casino under the Gambling Act 2005. The mayor hopes a casino, if permitted, will help to regenerate Torquay’s crumbling seafront.
Currently Torquay’s concrete promenade is falling apart, and has been declared unsafe – parts of it have had to be fenced off from the public. But the promenade is Torquay’s lifeblood and mayor Bye is adamant it should be saved.
“We have got to protect the Riviera feel of the resort,” said Bye. “It is not going to be completely covered in concrete, but if we have an imaginative development like a casino that could be spectacular.”
He went on to add that he hoped Torquay could “become the Monte Carlo of the West Country.” Big ideas maybe, but if Torquay wins approval for its “large” casino the town could see a lot of changes.
