Tax rises could scupper Great Yarmouth’s casino bid
New tax proposals include taxing slot machines at £5000 each, meaning a the 1250 machines proposed by any super casino bid would incur a start-up fee of £6.25 million in tax alone.
The news was greeted by howls of anguish from the gaming industry yesterday, with senior officials claiming that the tax is so high it could wreck plans for new casino developments across the country.
Great Yarmouth’s proposal for a super casino involves working with the prestigious hotel chain the Hilton Group. The council hope a casino may give a much needed boost to regeneration for a deprived area.
