Super Casino planned for £1.2 billion harbour re-development

Along with shops, restaurants, hotels, cinema complexes, apartment blocks and bars, the super casino will be the star attraction of the re-development, if a license is granted.

Scheduled to be run by the Las Vegas company MGM Mirage – operator’s of Las Vegas’s biggest casino of the same name – the casino would create thousands of jobs.

But first the casino must win permission from the government, which has said it will grant only one license for a ‘super casino’. Already at least nine rival proposals have been put in for the super casino, so the odds are not great for the developers of Glasgow harbour.

In fact along with bids form Birmingham, Blackpool, Cardiff, Coventry, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Salford and Sunderland, Peel Ports, the development company responsible for he proposal, must overcome another bid from Glasgow itself – from the Glasgow Rangers Football Club.

But Tom Allison, chief executive of Peel Ports, was not to be deterred: “We don't like to think of a plan B. It's like going into a boxing match thinking: 'What happens if I lose?’”
