Problem gambler is forced to donate winnings to charity

Never had the craps tables of the Grand Victoria Casino been so kind. This was a gamblers heaven.

But Nicholas was a problem gambler, and when he went to the cage to cash up his $22,800 in chips the casino authorities took the whole lot away, before arresting him and charging him with trespass. The money was then donated to a charity that works to help problem gamblers.

But this was not a case of the casino beating up on the little man, because Nicholas had enrolled in the Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program for Problem Gamblers. The VSEPPG involves those who enrol signing a form stating that is they are ever found gambling in an Illinois casino all their chips and tokens will be confiscated and donated to a charity that helps compulsives gamblers.

While it may be little consolation to Nicholas in the short term, perhaps the knowledge that he was responsible for the largest donation in the program’s four year existence may provide some sense of pride.
