Poker in rude health as record tumble at 2007 World Series of Poker
Well it took just one day for that to be exposed as the doom-mongering hogwash that it was. On Day Two the first of many $1500 No-Limit Hold’em events kicked off with a field of 2,998, the largest field ever assembled outside of a championship event.
A day later and another record fell when Steve Billirakis became the youngest ever winner of a WSOP bracelet. At just 21 years and ten days old Billirakis had only been legally allowed to play poker for ten days! No matter; the youngster had bloodied himself on the international circuit, picking up over $200,000 in live tournament earnings from events in the Bahamas and Canada, so he was well prepared when he reached the final table of Event #1, the $5000 Mixed Games tournament.
So far the big names have fallen just short of the ‘goldware’ in this year’s WSOP. Full Tilt’s Greg “FBT” Mueller finished second to Billirakis in the above tournament, while Alex Jacob finished third to Ciaran O’Leary in yesterday’s conclusion of the record breaking $1500 NL Hold’em event. But still, with 55 events scheduled for this year’s World Series you can be sure a few big names will get their hands on a bracelet or two before long.
The $10,000 Championship event kicks off on July 6th.
