PartyGaming and 888 Holdings hold merger talks
Both companies have suffered a massive drop in revenue since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) forced them to withdraw from the US online gambling market, which accounted for around 70 percent of their business.
The Sunday Times yesterday and The Financial Times today both carried reports suggesting that PartyGaming and 888 have already held preliminary talks about a possible merger. Apparently they aim to pool their resources to create a site with an enormously high volume of players. High player volume is one of the first things poker players look for when choosing a poker site.
Already PartyGaming has cancelled its interim dividend to free up $100 million to be used for acquisitions. The smaller sites that are still operational will now be looking over their shoulder as the race to make acquisitions heats up. Expect to see many of the little fish swallowed up by the big boys.
