Over 900 Harrah’s Employees Out of a Job
Although the company promised to give its ousted workers first refusal on new jobs in the re-built casinos many of these jobs won’t be open till next year.
Harrah’s Senior Vice President Jan Jones expressed his regret about the affair saying: “We weren't happy about sending those letters but it's become pretty clear to us that these properties are not going to reopen within any certain time frame.”
Up till November Harrah’s was paying the wages and benefits of 9,400 casino employees – a total of three months. The casinos had technically closed and under The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1989 the company was required to give notice of casino closures.
Harrah’s has already collected $3.5 million to help some of the hardest hit of its employees – or in this case former employees. That amount should substantially increase after Celine Dion, Elton John and Jerry Seinfeld perform in a fundraiser for the disaster.
