Aragorn, Frodo, Gandalf, Sam, Merry, Pip, Saruman and many more characters from classic book and popular movies are to be turned into an online slot.

The Lord of the Rings has one of the biggest fan bases of any movie franchise in recent history and the licensing agreement with Warner Bro. Digital Distribution is a coup for Microgaming, according to Roger Raatgever, CEO of Microgaming.

“We’re excited about creating state-of-the-art video slots from the best movie trilogy of the decade. We look forward to bringing The Lord of the Rings into the online gaming sphere, where our expertise in game quality and speed to market will ensure its success,” said Raatgever.

“The Lord of the Rings has a huge entrenched fan base with over 97% awareness of the film franchise, as well as phenomenal and unprecedented home video success,” he said.

Under the agreement, Microgaming will create graphically-rich video slot games using animation material, themes and characters from the motion picture trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

The trilogy was one of the movie events of the decade, generating $3billion in worldwide box office receipts. The three films were nominated for a total of 30 Academy Awards, winning 17 awards in total including Best Picture.

Let’s hope the Microgaming slot captures the imagination of the gaming public in the same way the movies mesmerised a generation of movie goers.
