London’s ‘Super Casinos’ must be careful
The report, published by The London Assembly, warned that while casinos might help to revitalise the run down areas where they are likely to be built, they must ensure they do not contribute to increased crime levels and problem gambling.
The new UK Gambling Act has relaxed gambling laws in the country and allowed for the introduction of big Las Vegas style casinos. At least two such casinos are expected in the capital, possibly in such locations as the Millennium Dome.
But Dee Doocey, chair of The London Assembly warns the city cannot afford to be complacent: “Super casinos could change the social and economic fabric of the capital.”
Currently London casinos only represent less than 20 per cent of the national total, yet bring in 60 per cent of the revenue – a measure of the wealth in the capital.
