Las Vegas casino cast away forever
The 450-room hotel was destroyed by Station Casinos, who own the property, with 195 pounds of explosive at about 7am.
It marks the end of a building to which many people had grown attached, since its erection in 1954, but one that Station Casinos said was unavoidable, as much of the structure was unsafe.
The original hotel casino, The Showboat – which is what many people still called Castaways – was a small Mississippi Riverboat themed venue. It became Castaways in 2000, when the interior was changed to look and feel like a tropical island.
Apparently Castaways was not a hit with the punters, as after just three years the hotel-casino was $50 million in debt and had to close, declaring itself bankrupt. Station Casinos then bought the site, for just $33.7 million.
The demolition opens up the site for a new Station Casino’s development.
