Illinois Gaming Board considers universal card plan for casino visitors

The state gaming board is considering a plan that requires every single person visiting an Illinois casino (15.3 million last year) to show a drivers license to gain entry.

The motive, say the gaming board, is to help stop compulsive gamblers who sign voluntary bans but then try to enter casinos when the withdrawal becomes too much. On top of that, a carding scheme will help catch underage gamblers.

The scheme would operate using ID machines, through which driving licenses can be swiped, making the process swift and simple. Linked to the state’s casino self-ban database – currently standing at 3,170 people – those who have applied for a self-ban can be easily identified.

So far, since the self-ban database was launched in 2002, people on the list have been caught trying to gamble 480 times.
