Global online gambling revenues will top $10 billion for 2005
According to the report US consumers currently spend twenty times the amount of money gambling that they spend on music downloads, and even ten times the amount they spend on porn in business terms one of the internets biggest success stories.
eMarketer adds that revenue only represents the house cut, the actual figure gambled online is estimated at over $200 billion.
Whilst online poker, with its ability to make the headlines, has been a major contributory factor in the growth in online gambling revenues, it is not alone. Revenue for online casinos has also grown and both look set to continue moving forward.
According to the report, data gathered from comScore Media Matrix and Nielsen/NetRatings shows over 15 percent of all US internet users (20 million people) visit gambling web sites.
Ben Macklin, Senior Analyst at eMarketer and author of the report said there are two main reasons for the good fortunes of online gambling: Its being driven by the televised poker craze and the growth of broadband.
