Gambling addict stole £1 million from work
Bryan Benjafield, 23, was earning £16,000 a year as an accounts administrator for a Dorset building firm. The court heard how he used his position to siphon off money from the company’s accounts into his own bank account and then into his Ladbrokes gambling account.
Benjafield is alleged to have spent up to £7000 a day, betting on every kind of sports, including football matches and horse racing horse racing as well as playing online poker and gambling in online casinos.
Over a short period of time Benjafield stole just under £200,000 a month before he was caught. His misdemeanours came to light when the company was contacted by Customs and Excise regarding an unpaid VAT bill. IT transpired that Benjafield had been stealing from the account normally used to pay tax bills.
