First Time Gamblers Storm Britain’s Casinos

The British public has taken full advantage of the law change it seems, flocking to casinos in unprecedented numbers. By the end of the year industry experts predict casinos will have seen 250,000 new punters.

The law change – abolishing the 24 hour cooling off period – means punters no longer have to register at a casino 24 hours before they wish to gamble. For the first time in the modern era punters can walk straight into a casino from the street and gamble immediately – if they so desire.

And the figures for new gamblers appear to show this is precisely what they desire, and although this worries anti-gambling groups, it is music to the ears of Britain’s 138 established casinos, as well as the 17 new casinos scheduled to open in 2009.

A spokesman for the British Casino Association said: “We mustn’t lose sight of the fact that there are many reasons for going to a casino other than to gamble. People can also enjoy dinner, watch live music and socialise with friends.”
The good news for the gambling industry doesn’t end there however, with news that in 2007 casinos will be allowed to advertise for the first time. The Gambling Commission is in the process of drawing up a code of conduct to regulate how gambling advertisements will work – it is expected to be similar to the rules on advertising alcohol.
