European Union Works to Prevent Gambling Monopolies

Recently, an increasing number of European countries have been working on legalizing and regulating online casinos and sportsbetting websites. However, on this long and complex journey to legislation, many operators are meeting with a very stubborn roadblock: The European Union.

All online casino legislation must be approved by The EU, but its recently assumed the role of online gambling watchdog is making it very difficult for operators to authorize their legislations. While the European Union is very dedicated to ensuring that players gambling online in safe and secure environments, their newfound austerity is hindering the European movement towards regulation.

The European Union is working hardest at preventing monopolies, but most of the European countries involved in online gambling are trying to monopolize their own markets. Because the EU is dedicated to the uniting of all European countries, monopolies counteract this goal. The European Union wants French customers to be able to play at Italian casinos, and vice versa, but each individual country’s legislation contains features that promote monopolies.

France is one of the most hard-working countries in this battle, having recently been rejected by the EU. They stated that France’s legislation has issues, including its proposed policy concerning bases of operations, which state that all operators (including those offshore) must have physical locations in France. While seemingly beneficial, the EU has stated this will encourage monopolies, giving a competitive advantage to online casinos based in France.
