In a statement to the European Parliament’s ECON Committee Charlie McCreevy, the EU’s Internal Market Commissioner said: “In order to protect, I'd say, their own business, their industry there, they have de facto prevented foreigners from online betting into the United States. In my view it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another forum.”

The statement had an immediate effect on the online gaming industry, with shares in PartyGaming, the company behind PartyPoker, rising 2p to 29.5p.
