Could be years before US changes law on online gaming
David Stewart, a Washington attorney who advise the American Gaming Association, said: “If it comes up again, they're going to say, 'We've already dealt with that issue’.”
Although many of the new Democrats in Congress are seen as more libertarian and open-minded towards online gambling, Stewart thinks it could be over a decade before any change occurs. Put simply, the people in a position to change things have too much to lose, and too little to gain, to do much about it.
The main problem is that the newly elected Democrats, who were not responsible for the UIGEA, will not suffer politically because of its existence, but will doubtless invite that scorn of conservatives across the country if they campaign to have it overturned. The easy option for them is to do nothing.
Of course for UK gamblers this has little or no consequence, due to the continued legal operation of many well known brands such as InterCasino and 32Red.com.
