Casino accident victim hits $1 million jackpot
Robyn Smith was with her husband, Robert Wilson, as he played on a video poker machine in the casino in St Charles in May 2002 when the accident occurred. When a quarter Wilson inserted into the machine fell straight back into the coin return he bent down to pick it up, only for the front panel of the machine, weighing 20 pounds, fell of and landed on his wife’s foot.
After the accident Smith’s foot swelled and she was diagnosed with “complex regional pain syndrome,” which is a nerve disorder affecting the exact site of an injury. She remains in intermittent pain but will not disclose any evidence of the injuries as it is protected by medical confidentiality.
Lawyers for Ameristar confirmed they have agreed to settle with Ms Smith, but have not disclosed the exact amount. However the award is believed to be in the region of $1 million, dwarfing the typical video poker machine jackpots in that region.
