Cardiff plans ‘super casino’ for £700 million development

The sports village development is designed to attract teams preparing for the 2012 London Olympics, but the council says it needs the casino in order to help finish building the village in time.

Calling the casino bid launch “a crucial stage in the development of the international sports village” council leader Rodney Berman echoed calls from other council leaders for the Gambling Act to be altered to allow more ‘super casinos’. Currently the new UK Gambling Act allows for only one ‘super casino’ but council leaders across the country are calling for the number to be increased to the eight originally suggested.

Mr Berman went to say that “a casino (would) help maximise the potential of the ISV as a world class sporting and leisure facility and give Cardiff a fantastic opportunity to play a big part in the 2012 Olympics.”

The council have named the UK/Australian firm Aspers as the company which will operate the casino if the bid is successful.
