Britain hosts gambling summit

The aim of the conference was to try and agree a set of guiding principles for the regulation of internet gambling with the 31 other nations present at the summit. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Gibraltar, Costa Rica, Antigua and South Africa were among those in attendance. According to UK Sports Minister Richard Caborn there was “no political dissension” during the summit.

Jowell compared the US position to the ban on alcohol during the 1920’s, saying that driving internet gambling underground would make it impossible to provide the kind of protections that vulnerable individuals needed. The ministers emphasised that regulation was not about a “tax grab” but was seen instead as the best way to protect British people from the dangers of gambling.

However Richard Caborn did sound a warning shot to executives of online gambling companies, saying that Britain would not protect them from legitimate extradition requests. “People have to abide by the laws of particular countries,” said Caborn. “We will not acknowledge people who operate illegally.
