Birmingham NEC emerging as front runner for UK’s first ‘super casino’
The independent inquiry, carried out by the consultancy firm Roger Tym & Partners on behalf of John Prescott’s department appears to suggest the NEC as a suitable site for the regional casino, whilst dashing the hopes of previous front runner Blackpool.
Birmingham is praised for having “an established casino presence,” with the NEC’s Style City bid receiving special mention. As well as Birmingham, Coventry’s bid also came in for praise, while London Manchester and Sheffield were not discounted.
But doubtless to the dismay of Blackpool City councillors their bid ran into trouble, with the report suggesting there was “no space (in Blackpool) for a regional casino”. Blackpool had widely been considered to be heading the race for the government’s approval.
Although government officials insisted no decisions had yet been made about the future location of the country’s first ‘super casino’ it is clear this report will have some bearing on the final decision. That is not due to be taken for some months yet.
