Birmingham Decision to Delay Criticised
Friday’s announcement that the council will not be making a decision until next summer at the earliest has thrown the whole process into confusion and increased the likelihood of further bids entering the fray.
And yesterday Gisela Stuart MP said that the council must not dither over its decision, claiming the council was making a mess of the decision process.
The council’s decision to delay was apparently prompted by a reinterpretation of a letter from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (the government department responsible for issuing gaming licenses). The letter supposedly gave the impression that bids had to be in by January – now the council has decided this is not the case.
Ken Hardeman, the Birmingham cabinet member who recently criticised the NEC, said the council was expecting an approach from and American gaming company regarding the super casino.
