Anchutz’s controversial bid leads super-casino race
The UK Casino Advisory Panel was supposed to decide the winner before the end of this year, though it looks increasingly likely that the winner will not be announced till January.
Phillip Anchutz’s bid caused widespread outcry when it was discovered he had already started building the casino, and hiring workers, months before the winner was dues to be announced. This led to accusations that his close relationship with Labour’s Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott had effectively given his company the license.
Such accusations are bound to be repeated now that a 92 page report by the Casino Advisory Panel has suggested the Millennium Dome as the best place for the casino from social and economic standpoints. This view has been ridiculed across the country for a variety of reasons, not least the successful London bid for the 2012 Olympics, which will bring huge investment into the exact same area, neutralising any arguments that the casino would help to regenerate the surrounding area.
