57 percent of Brits are Online

The report is good news for the online gaming industry, for which more internet users inevitably means more business. The figure of 56.7 per cent is up ten percent on last year, a very significant rise.

According to James Belcher, author of the report: “As a percentage of online users, eMarketer projects that the UK will catch up with the US by 2008.”

The boom has been fuelled by a competitive market, with British Telecom’s broadband-enabling telephone lines now open to competition from Internet Service Providers (ISP).

Increasingly this has meant that customers are opting for ISP which can offer Internet, television and phone services in a single package.

The report also claimed that the increased numbers and experience of British internet users is fuelling a boom in e-commerce.

“As users gain experience [of online financial transaction] they buy higher-ticket items on the web – even to the extent that it is detrimental to some physical high street retail stores,” said the report.
