Genting UK has closed the doors of the Fox Poker Club in London that it acquired last year, and is to re-open it as one of its own branded casinos in the spring of 2013.
Genting confirmed the closure in an announcement on its website yesterday, following the Genting Poker Series held there over the weekend.
The Fox Poker Club opened in September 2010 as London’s only dedicated and fully licensed poker club, establishing an online partnership with 3D poker room PKR.
But despite being conceived by business partners Ian Hogg and Chris North back in 2005, the venue in London’s Shaftesbury Avenue however didn’t open its doors until the apex of the online poker boom had been reached, and quickly ran into financial difficulties, spurring its sale to Genting in November 2011.
Genting said via its Twitter feed yesterday that the venue “will be refurbished and reborn in Spring 2013 as an exciting new Genting venue”.
Genting, the third largest global casino operator, is also the largest land-based casino operator in the UK with 46 properties, and seems set to add to this with the conversion of the venue in the heart of London ‘s West End into multi-purpose gaming venue.
The company also operates online gambling in the UK under the Circus Casino, Genting Casino and Genting Poker brands, and recently signed a deal to license an online gaming platform from software provider ComTrade, marking an end to its exclusive supply relationship with Playtech. The company is understood to be unhappy about its relegation to the lower tier of iPoker after Playtech split operators’ players into two groups from September based on a network scoring mechanism.
