Betfred has extended its sponsorship of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the world’s most prestigious steeplechase.
The Manchester-headquartered bookmaker sponsored the Gold Cup for the first time this year, assuming the mantle from Totesport after it acquired the government-owned bookie for £265m in June 2011.
Totesport, formerly known as the Tote, had sponsored the National Hunt race since 1980. Betfred’s new deal will run up to and including the 2015 edition of the centrepiece of the annual jumps festival, held at the Prestbury Park racecourse.
Betfred’s managing director John Haddock said: “We are delighted to be associated for three more years with the greatest steeplechase in the world.”
Peter McNeile, Cheltenham’s director of sponsorship, said the organisation was “delighted” to secure Betfred’s commitment for a further three years, saying both parties were “committed to raising the profile of this iconic event even further.”
In addition to its core horse racing sponsorships, Betfred is also the sponsor of the World Snooker Championships, and is the official betting partner of both Wembley Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur.
