UK online bingo activity fell by close to 30% during last month’s mini-heatwave, according to new data.
The number of UK online bingo players dipped to around 289,000 at the height of last month’s mini-heatwave, 27 May, on which temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius in some areas of the UK, according to bingo information site Bingoport.
This figure was 28% lower than the approximately 400,000 players recorded on the two coldest days of the month, 3 and 4 May, when temperatures topped out at just 9.6 degrees.
Poor recent weather in the UK – April was the coldest since 1989 and the wettest since 2000 – has helped offset the traditional seasonal weakness that affects online gambling activity levels from the spring into the summer. However, global online poker cash game traffic, taking into account more markets than the UK, indicates declining activity levels since the first part of May, falling 6.3% last week alone, according to data published by leading tracking site Pokerscout.
But while bingo, poker and casino websites are now being affected by the summer slowdown, European online bookmakers are currently making the most of this year’s main betting opportunity, the Euro 2012 football championships, following the absence of a major football tournament last summer.
Bingoport published the figures as part of its new May-June Bingo Trends quarterly report.
