The 98-year-old woman summoned to court last week on gambling charges after police raided a poker home game in which she was playing has had the charges against her dropped.
As reported last week, Eftychia Yiasemidou and around 40 other elderly females were playing poker and bridge for small stakes at one of the women’s homes in the town of Limassol in Cyprus in November 2009 when police raided the premises.
A court summons was issued more than two years after the raid had taken place, with the women facing a potential €750 fine or up to six months imprisonment under Cypriot law, that is with the exception of two of the women, whom it was revealed had since died.
However, an assistant for the attorney general said Friday that his office had been oblivious to the case until it was reported by various media outlets around the world, and that the charges against all the women had been dropped.
