Betfair launches controversial new betting tool

Sports betting website Betfair has today launched a web tool that displays its odds on sporting events to a customer even when they are browsing a competitor’s website.

The Betfair Everywhere add-on, downloadable from Betfair’s website and available to users of Google’s Chrome web browser, will not only automatically display odds to the betting exchange’s customers while they are looking at other sports bettng and sports news websites, it will also them to place a bet there and then, without having to even leave the page they are looking at.

The betting exchange’s operations director, Ian Chuter, today called Betfair Everywhere “an innovative, and dare I say cheeky, use” of Google Chrome’s extension technology. According to Chuter on the company’s corporate blog, a small group of engineers working for Betfair came up with the idea a few months ago in Romania while taking part in a special “Fed-Ex day”, during which developers and designer were given free rein to build whatever they liked within a 24-hour time period.

The launch of the controversial new tool is supported by the Don’t settle for less” advertising campaign, aimed at getting the message to consumers that Betfair’s prices, which run off its core betting exchange product, are consistently better than those being offered by its competitors. Chuter argued that when the company’s actions “ruffled a few feathers in our industry”, as this new product and campaign were doing, this proved it was “doing something right”.
