Grosvenor’s plans to open a new casino in New Brighton, Merseyside have caused outrage among some of the town’s older residents who claim their seaside landscape is being spoiled by unattractive and boisterous entertainment venues.
The newest G Casino will cover 24,000 square feet and is all set to open its doors in May 2012 after getting the go ahead from Wirral Council. The project will cost £6 million and is expected to create 150 new jobs.
The G Casino’s facilities will include a restaurant, cocktail bar, live shows, free membership and free car park. Players will be able to enjoy casino table games, slots, electronic gaming and live poker.
This venture is part of the town’s £60 million regeneration project, the Neptune scheme, which sees a multitude of different entertainment venues, shops and hotels opening at the New Brighton Marina Point leisure complex.
Despite the excitement surrounding the project, many residents have concerns over the development in general for aesthetic reasons as well as the moral implications of welcoming a
gambling venue into their locality.
The Reverend Robert Nelson told the committee they were worried about the impact a casino could have on “young people and vulnerable adults in the area”.
Worries also centred around the potential noise disturbance.
Grosvenor has plans to “open lines of communication” with the community to deal with any concerns and assure residents that New Brighton can only benefit from the venture.
